Skin & Coat Products
When it's time for giving your pet a bath you need to make sure that your using the correct pet shampoo. You may ask why? This is because the skin on your pet can vary and is different than the skin that we have. If you use the wrong skin and coat product - say human shampoo for example, this can lead to the skin on your pet drying out and causing them discomfort. Using human shampoo on your pet does not work because the ingredients are totally different than that of pet shampoo's. For one, human shampoo contains a lower pH than pet shampoo and this could lead to your pet's dry skin.
So here are some steps to take when choosing skin and coat products that are appropriate for your beloved pet:
- Look at your pet's skin and try to determine his or her skin type. If you notice any skin flaking, then your pet most likely has dry skin. This means it is fair to say that your pet has oily skin if you notice there is any type of oil residue when you rub your fingers through your pet's fur or their fur tends to become oily. It is good to separate the fur since oil may not be visible on the surface, especially in long-haired pets. If you do not observe either of these issues then it's a safe bet that your pet has normal skin. It is a good idea to inquire with a veterinarian though.
- When choosing a pet shampoo for your pet, be sure to pick one specifically for your pet's skin condition. You need to look at the ingredients and make sure that they are natural ingredients. All too often the ingredients will contain synthetic products which are not healthy for your pet.
Sometimes there may be other factors to consider - like fleas and ticks. You can get an all natural shampoo that will help you get rid of these and help with any skin condition that your pet may have. However, using such a shampoo means that it is important to avoid getting it in your pet's eyes and mouth because it can be harmful.
- Should you notice that your pet is scratching itself often, you should take notice of the area that it is scratching and have a closer look at it. This could indicate that your pet may have a more serious condition such as mange. By continuing to use the pet shampoo you risk making the condition worse. You should consult with your vet at this time. If your pet has the mites that cause mange, then the vet may prescribe a parasitic shampoo to alleviate the problem. If your pet doesn't have any kind of skin disorder, then switching to a different pet shampoo with an ingredient such as aloe vera or some kind of conditioner may do the trick.
One more thing you should take note on when buying a skin and coat product for your pet is if it is overly scented or not. The ingredients that they put into the shampoo to make it so scented could be synthetic and do more harm to your pet's skin than good. You should strive to get a shampoo that has little scent or no scent at all. Your pet will thank you because he won't be walking around smelling like he just got out of a perfume factory.
By following these few steps you can find a skin and coat product that best fits your pet's skin type. Skin irritation should not happen if you have the right shampoo. Not all pet's have the same skin type, so it is important that you do your homework when picking a shampoo out for your pet. If you are not sure then you should ask your vet for help in picking one out. Your pet will love you for it.
